The GW Hatchet was founded in 1904 and incorporated as an independent corporation in 1993.
Hatchet Publications, Inc. is a non-profit corporation in the District of Columbia.
Donations are tax deductible; check with your tax advisor for specific rules.
Articles of Incorporation (filed 7/1/93):
"Third: The Corporation is organized and will be operated exclusively for such
educational and charitable purposes as may qualify it for tax-exempt status under section
501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Such purposes include, but are not limited to, the
following:
- (a) To edit, print, publish, sell and distribute The GW Hatchet, the primary student
newspaper of general interest and circulation at The George Washington University, or
any successor publication and such other publications through print and other media as
the Board of Directors may from time to time determine is appropriate, as an education
and informational service independent of, but benefitting The George Washington
University community;
- (b) To provide, with the assistance of those with professional journalism and
business experience, a practical and realistic educational experience for students and
others who comprise the staff of the Corporation's publications;"
Bylaws (adopted 7/1/93):
- Article 1.03: "The purposes of the Corporation are to own and operate a student
newspaper, known as The Hatchet, and its adjunt publications, and to engage in any
other lawful activities, both for the benefit of the community of The George Washington
University and as an educational experience for student members of the staff. The
Corporation shall carry out its purposes and conduct its activities within the purview of
Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue code, as it currently exists or may be amended,
and other applicable provisions of federal and District of Columbia law."
The Board of Directors, consists of 9 voting members:
- 3 members of the editorial staff (including the editor in chief and managing editor)
- 3 professionals with experience in print journalism, business and/or law
- 1 member of GW's alumni who was an editorial staff member
- 1 journalism faculty member
- 1 non-Hatchet student
